Repetition of stories may allow their erasure and with them that of their tellers. The implications of such tolerated erasures, however, exceed what is erased, reaching all that will be subsequently told and imagined, foregoing to an extent the need to further erase. This condition of our present times, to which testifies the tiring of stories about the annihilation of Palestinians alongside the killing of Palestinian journalists and writers is a witness, requires literature to be a field that revokes the limits erasure instils and formulates new words.
PEN-lezing: Adania Shibli - Words in the Aftermath of Killing the Messengers
Op 17 april zal de eerste jaarlijkse PEN-lezing plaatsvinden in de Balie, gegeven door Adania Shibli, met als titel: Words in the Aftermath of Killing the Messengers.
Adania Shibli is een belangrijke stem in de hedendaagse literatuur. In haar werk behandelt ze thema's als macht, misbruik en de vrijheid van taal. Als Palestijnse schrijver heeft ze meegemaakt hoe Palestijnse stemmen op ongekende schaal onderdrukt en systematisch uitgewist worden. In oktober 2023 weigerde de Frankfurter Book Fair haar de LiBeraturpreis uit te reiken vanwege de oorlog in Gaza.
In de eerste jaarlijkse PEN lezing zal Shibli spreken over de vrijheid van expressie van schrijvers, dichters en journalisten, en het uitwissen van het Palestijnse perspectief.
Taghreed El-Khodary, Maurits de Bruijn en Nadia Bouras zullen na afloop op de lezing reageren. Vertaler van Shibli's werk Djûke Poppinga zal vertellen over haar rol als vertaler.
